Why Have a Naming Ceremony?

When people hear the words naming ceremony, they often immediately think of welcoming a new baby.

And yes, those ceremonies are always incredibly special, gathering your favourite people together to celebrate a tiny new person and the family growing around them.

As an Independent Master Celebrant, I absolutely love creating naming ceremonies because they give families the chance to celebrate an individual in a way that feels warm, relaxed, personal and genuinely meaningful without feeling formal or forced.

There are so many different reasons people choose to mark a new beginning.

Because naming ceremonies are not just about babies. They’re about identity, belonging, family and celebrating the people we love in a way that feels authentic to them.

There’s something really special about gathering the people you love together and saying, “This person matters” That’s what a naming ceremony is all about.

For some families, a naming ceremony is an alternative to a religious christening. For others, it’s simply a lovely excuse to bring everyone together and mark a huge moment in life. I think we could all do with more reasons to celebrate the people we love!

Families Come in All Shapes and Sizes

Some children arrive after years of fertility treatment. Some through adoption. Some are welcomed by single parents, LGBTQ+ families, blended families or chosen families built through friendship and love rather than biology alone.

Naming ceremonies celebrate:

  • A new baby
  • An adopted child officially becoming part of their forever family
  • Siblings coming together in a blended family
  • A chosen or changed name
  • Cultural traditions being woven together
  • A fresh start after a difficult chapter

As an Independent Master Celebrant, I genuinely believe every family deserves the chance to celebrate their story in a way that feels personal, relaxed and full of warmth.

Baby Naming Ceremonies

These are probably the ceremonies people are most familiar with.

A baby naming ceremony is a chance to welcome a child into their family and community without the structure or religious framework of a christening.

There are no strict rules. That freedom means we can create something that genuinely reflects your family rather than squeezing you into a tradition that doesn’t quite fit.

Ceremonies can include:

  • Parental Promises
  • God Parents/ Guide Parents or Supporting Adults
  • Readings and Music
  • Symbolic Gestures
  • Stories about your journey to parenthood
  • Cultural traditions
  • Sibling involvement

Adoption Celebrations

These ceremonies are incredibly emotional in the very best way.

An adoption celebration acknowledges not only the child but the journey that brought everyone together. It marks the moment a chosen family becomes an official forever family.

They often feel deeply joyful because they hold so much love, relief, resilience and hope all in one room.

I think these ceremonies are particularly powerful because they intentionally pause and say:

“You belong here. You are loved. You are ours.”

Chosen Name Ceremonies

One of the things I love about Celebrancy is that it creates space for ceremonies that traditional institutions often don’t.

A chosen name ceremony can celebrate someone fully and publicly stepping into their identity, surrounded by the people who love and support them.

For some people, that may be connected to gender identity. For others, it may mark reclaiming a family name, cultural identity or simply beginning a new chapter in life.

These ceremonies can be quiet and intimate or joyful and celebratory, but they are always incredibly personal.

Being seen as who you truly are matters.

Blended Family Ceremonies

Weddings often focus on the couple, but blended family naming ceremonies create space to celebrate the children and relationships at the centre of a newly formed family, too.

These ceremonies can acknowledge:

  • Stepchildren
  • New siblings
  • Co-parenting relationships
  • Shared family values
  • The reality that families are often beautifully complicated.

I love helping families include children meaningfully rather than expecting them to quietly sit through an adult event.

Sometimes that means promises from siblings. Sometimes, sand ceremonies. Sometimes family playlists and pizza afterwards.

There really are no rules.

Celebrating Love, Connection and Belonging

At the heart of every naming ceremony is the same idea: people gathering together to acknowledge love, connection and belonging.

Just creating a moment where the people closest to you can witness and celebrate an important chapter in your life. There’s no pressure to fit into someone else’s idea of what family celebrations should look like.

And in a world where life moves very quickly, I honestly think there’s something really powerful about choosing to pause and mark those moments properly.

Because every family story is original.
